Somebody To Lean On

Grow These Together!

Artichokes & Bush Beans –

Artichokes and beans enjoy similar soil and sun conditions. The stalky, branching structure of the artichoke will help to support your beans, and the beans nitrogen fixing nature help to support the nutrient needs of your artichokes. I opt for a bush bean here, so as to not overburden the artichoke and because I think the royal burgundy beans look quite nice with the artichokes.

Okra & Melons –

These two have similar growing needs. The thick stalks of the okra provide support for vining melons, and the melon’s leaves will help with moisture retention in the sunny location. Choose a small melon variety and provide supplemental nitrogen every 3-4 weeks for greatest success with this pairing.

Pole Tomatoes & Peas –

Peas will love climbing a trellis alongside your tomatoes. The peas can help to secure your tomatoes to the trellis and support the nitrogen need of your tomatoes. The added foliage can also work to keep tomatoes from getting a sunburn.

Amaranth & Pole Beans –

Amaranth’s minimal nutrient needs make it a great companion plant. The thick stalk of amaranth is perfect for climbing pole beans. Amaranth also attracts many beneficial pollinators and predator insects, as well as acting as a trap plant for pests like flea beetles and cucumber beetles.

Scarlet Runner Beans & Corn –

I’m sure most of you have heard the legend of the three sisters by now and are aware of what a great combo corn and pole beans make. Any beans will work; I just happen to love the strikingly beautiful blossoms of the scarlet runner beans.

Cucumbers & Nasturtiums –

These two won’t help hold each other up, but they will happily climb the trellis together. The nasturtiums, in addition to being lovely, attract pollinators and act as a trap plant for cucumber beetles.

Okra & Cowpea/blackeye pea Beans –

Nitrogen loving okra will love growing alongside any type of bean and we know okra and blackeye peas are a tried and true southern classic. Your beans will feel supported by okra’s stalky structure.

Sunflowers & Small Fancy Gourds –

The robust stalk of the Mammoth sunflowers provides excellent support for small gourds to vine up. As your sunflowers bloom in late summer/early fall, your gourds should be approaching maturity and beginning to turn vibrant and varied hues, making for a stunning late season pair!
