Planting & Harvesting

Seed Depth: surface

Spacing: 3″ (8cm)

Sprouts In: 10-21 days

Thinning: 8-12″ (20-30cm)

Sow seeds outdoors in full sun and rich, moist soil after last spring frost when soil has warmed to at least 65°F. Will transplant well if started indoors 4-6 weeks before last spring frost date. Press seeds lightly into soil; they require light to germinate. Once established, cockscomb thrives in hot, slightly dry conditions, but don’t let plants dry entirely. Mulch well, and water plants consistently at soil level to prevent fungal growth. Will appreciate low-nitrogen fertilizer every four weeks.

Remove and discard plants in fall after first frost. To dry cut flowers, tie stems together and hang upside down indoors in a dry location.
