Rutabagas are very frost hardy and can be planted outside from early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked, to early summer for fall crops. Be sure to leave plenty of room for mature plants to grow.

Harvest in the fall after a few frosts have sweetened the flavor. Apply a heavy mulch after tops have died back to store them in the ground until they are dug up.
